Equestrian Arena in Lavington, near Devizes

A few images from this week’s equestrian arena build near Devizes which is a 20m x30m school where we reduced the site and put down drainage in Geotex membrane and stone.

Woven Geotextiles are made from 100% polypropylene or polyester and have long been specified by marine engineers, civil engineers and landscape contractors for use in stabilising soil and aggregate layers.

Pollarding a large poplar in Devizes

This tree had not been pollarded by the previous tree surgeons when doing others on site last year due to the complexity of its position over the buildings/ sheds.  The tree’s limbs were overhanging the play area at Sixpenny Children’s Nursery in Devizes and, as the tree had been shedding limbs, quick action was required by Trevor, Steve and Rich.  All done now with a site safety survey due in the autumn.

Clearly, a case of Conservation Contractors reaching those parts where others can’t!!!

The brown long-eared bat visits my office in Devizes

A more unusual visitor to my office!

The brown long-eared bat is easy to identify because of their unmistakable ears, which are almost as long as their body. In flight, their ears are held upright, but they curl back like ram’s horns or are tucked under their wings when the bat is at rest.   These ears look rather like a pair of boxing gloves, I think…

Maybe I should take comfort to read that they frequently roost in houses, often in large open roof spaces of older buildings and generally roost singly or in small groups.

But it did only stay the one night!

Health and Safety works to trees at Drew’s Pond, Devizes Jan 18

Following recent call-outs due to high winds, we were back to work at Drew’s Pond – just south of Devizes – for health and safety works to the trees near and overhanging footpaths.

Drew’s Pond is a small community broadleaved coppiced managed woodland with plenty of paths and good bird and butterfly habitats.

Roadside dismantle of unbalanced and dangerous Sycamore Trees, Devizes

Today we undertook a roadside dismantle of unbalanced and dangerous sycamore trees on the main road into Devizes  – so all hands on deck.  The owner was concerned about the trees falling onto the highway.  The three trees were 80ft tall but sitting on top of a 40ft bank so 120ft over the road surface below.

Dismantle Poplar Tree in Urchfont

Trevor and Matt have joined the team this week and it was “in at the deep end” with a dismantle of a large Poplar Tree in Urchfont followed by a large tidy up…
The tree had become too large for its position close to the house.  Urchfont is north of the Salisbury Plain and south east of Devizes.

Post and rail Secret Valley Devizes

Some post and rail we erected in the Secret Valley Devizes that we did a week or so ago.  This was a joint effort by the tree division landscaping team and our fencing team. Our remit was to tidy and enhance thus we erected 50m post and rail and a gate.  This has to be one of the prettiest villages I’ve ever worked in.
