Spraying 100,000 newly planted trees across Wiltshire and Hampshire April 2024
Tad has been busy during the settled weather last week spraying over 100, 000 newly planted trees across Wiltshire and Hampshire to control the weeds to ensure they have the best possible start.
60 m of sweet chestnut cleft post and rail
Another 60 m of sweet chestnut cleft post and rail was completed recently in Berkshire.
This was part of a larger project with 700m of stock fence and a gate or two.
Timber for processing into firewood

Clear a few small trees over a bridleway was the brief !!
Clear a few small trees over a bridleway was the brief !! The trees were suspended over a dead-end bridleway near Market Lavington. There is one covered in Ivy near which has worsened.

30 plus tree guards erected in Longleat
30 plus tree guards were erected in Longleat over the last week to protect young trees from all sorts of wildlife !!
I think it is fair to say everyone has had enough of this wet weather now !

Cleft Sweet Chestnut fence around a lake near Devizes
A couple of jobs this week:
- A Cleft sweet chestnut fence around a lake near Devizes and
- a guard rail fence was repaired in Westbury
All with no raincoat required !!

Cleft rail fences, also known as chestnut fences, are constructed using split logs. We used 2.4m. Commonly, these logs have pre-shaped ends that fit snugly into mortices in the fence posts. This design allows the rails to slot into the timber posts easily. Sweet chestnut does not require any treatment to help improve its lifespan – the timber contains natural preservatives. There is no industry standard for the length of the logs given their curved and bendy nature.

Erecting 200 signs
They say a picture is worth “one thousand words”.
200 signs were erected last week; I do not think any explanation is required!
Hedge replacement following storm damage Wilsford March 2024
Replacement of a hedge damaged by a lorry which came off the road during a storm in Wilsford in the Vale of Pewsey.
We used a mix of native hedging including hawthorn and field maple as well as planting some oak trees.
Work completed by the BNG team.
Site clearance near Marlborough March 2024
Another site clearance job finished in time for a move to the next project on Monday.
